Nepal: Swasthani Bratakatha Celebrations

Swasthani Bratakatha is a Hindu festival observed in Nepal every year during January and February. The festival draws its name from the Swasthani Brata Katha, a 31 -Chapter sacred book devoted to God Madhavnarayan and Goddess Swasthani.  The daily festivities throughout the month includes reciting of a chapter every day for the 31 days. Women usually observe month-long fasting in pursuit of happiness and prosperity of the family. Some women also claim the fast is essential for getting good husbands. The devotees go on pilgrimages, take holy dip and in river and perform other religious rituals throughout the month.
